Australia’s climate varies enormously, from cool regional areas and exposed coastal sites to hot inland conditions. A home that works beautifully in one location may need a very different response somewhere else.

Climate-responsive design begins with understanding the site. Orientation, sunlight, prevailing winds, surrounding vegetation and seasonal temperature changes all influence how a home should be positioned and detailed.

At Otto Projects, we consider these factors from the beginning. Living spaces are designed to make the most of natural light, while carefully placed windows, shading and ventilation help create comfortable interiors throughout the year.

Good design can also reduce a home’s reliance on mechanical heating and cooling. Thoughtful orientation, insulation, glazing and material selection can make a significant difference to comfort and energy use over the life of the building.

Our homes begin with a resolved architectural design, but every site is different. The final siting and documentation process allows the home to respond to local conditions, planning requirements and the particular character of the landscape.
